High Winds and Your Roof: What Every Property Owner Should Watch For

Strong winds are one of the most common causes of roof damage in Texas. Even when there is no hail or heavy rain, powerful wind gusts can compromise the integrity of your roofing system. In areas like North Texas where storms frequently bring sudden high winds, it’s important for property owners to understand how wind affects a roof and what signs of damage to watch for.

At 3:16 Roofing & Construction, we often see roofs that appear fine from the ground but have sustained damage that can lead to leaks or premature roof failure if left unaddressed.

How High Winds Damage Roofing Systems

Wind puts intense pressure on roofing materials. As wind flows over a roof, it creates uplift forces that can loosen or tear shingles, metal panels, flashing, and other parts.

Wind damage happens mainly in two ways:

  • Direct Wind Uplift

Strong gusts catch shingle edges and lift them. If the wind force is stronger than the shingle’s seal, shingles can tear, crease, or blow off completely.

  • Progressive Wind Damage

Once one shingle or section loosens, wind can slip underneath nearby materials. This damage spreads during the storm or worsens over time.

Obvious Signs of Wind Damage

Some damage is easy to spot after a storm:

  • Blown or Missing Shingles

Missing shingles expose the underlayment and roof decking. This leaves your roof vulnerable to water leaks and further damage.

  • Lifted or Flapping Shingles

Shingles that are loose but still attached may flap in the wind. They look uneven or raised compared to the rest of the roof.

  • Debris on the Roof

Branches and leaves can hit the roof during high winds, damaging shingles or flashing.

Less Noticeable Wind Damage

Not all wind damage is visible right away. Some signs require closer inspection:

  • Zippering

Zippering occurs when a row of shingles loses its seal due to wind uplift. Instead of individual shingles failing, the damage travels along a horizontal line across the roof, resembling a zipper pattern.

This often happens when:

  • Wind lifts the leading edge of a shingle

  • The seal strip breaks or weakens

  • Multiple shingles along the same row lose adhesion

Over time, this allows wind and moisture to penetrate beneath the roofing system.

  • Damaged Flashing

Flashing seals roof joints and edges. Wind can bend or loosen flashing, creating gaps where water can enter.

  • Cracked or Creased Shingles

When wind lifts a shingle and bends it backward, it can create a permanent crease. Even if the shingle settles back into place, the crease weakens the material and increases the likelihood that it will eventually break or blow off.

  • Seal Failure

Modern shingles rely on adhesive seal strips to hold them down. High winds can break these seals without visibly damaging the shingle itself. Once the seal is broken, shingles are much more vulnerable during the next storm.

When to Schedule a Roof Inspection

After strong wind events, it’s always a good idea to have a professional roof inspection performed. A trained roofing contractor can identify both obvious and hidden damage that may qualify for repair or insurance coverage.

Property owners should consider an inspection if they notice:

  • Shingles in the yard after a storm

  • Loose or lifted shingles

  • Interior water stains

  • Debris impact on the roof

  • Recent storms with wind gusts exceeding 50–60 mph
